puck board
DCHP-2 (Jul 2016)
Spelling variants:puckboard
n. — Hockey
high density polyethylene sheeting, often used for the boards in a hockey rink.
Type: 5. Frequency — Puck board refers to a type of hard and durable polyethylene material in any context (see the 2007 quotation), yet the term appears frequently in hockey contexts. This informal but descriptive name for an industrial plastic may have originated in Canada, as database searches place the earliest attestations of puck board in Canadian newspapers. The term, however, is certainly most frequent in Canada (see Chart 1), which is understandable given the national importance of (ice) hockey. The material is used elsewhere; the term is not (or nearly not).
